Open Letter to all on the fence about Horror Realm…

Open Letter to all on the fence about Horror Realm…

Die hard horror movie fans it is six weeks out and once again it is time for me to make my case as to why you should come to the Horror Realm convention in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Horror Realm’s first year went very well last September. I had a great time plus everyone else did also. But here’s the thing these days there is way too many conventions to pick from? Some who are just out for your money and others who actually try their best to give you the horror fans what you want? Horror Realm falls in the latter where yes, Horror Realm is a small convention but is growing… Horror Realm is a convention run by horror movie fans who want to give you a horror convention that isn’t the same as others around the country. Yeah, you can debate if Horrorfind, Texas Frightmare, Fright Night Film Fest is better? But I’m here to tell all in the Pittsburgh area and surrounding states where lots of other horror convention goers live, Horror Realm is not about ego, it’s about putting on the best fucking horror movie convention to the best of their ability!!!

Again, yes, Horror Realm might not have the money to place ads in high profile horror mags like a Fango convention or the money to bring in say a Robert Englund for example, but the name of Horror Realm is getting around to different celebrities that the convention is not only a fan friendly but celebrity friendly convention. Now with help from horror genre star Ken Foree, Horror Realm continues to grow (Horror Realm is already scheduled in September 2011).

Horror Realm is trying to make their place in the horror community to where it’s a very talked about event not only in the Pittsburgh area but throughout the world by doing their best to put together a horror convention run by horror movie fans that people cannot wait to attend again. This year they hit the jackpot: Basket Case reunion! You are not going to see this reunion at any other horror movie convention scheduled for the rest of this year? Come on how often does this chance come along to meet these fine people? Not often…

Yes, there is other options convention wise out there. But I invite you to come to Horror Realm and tell me ‘you didn’t have a good time’? Horror Realm kicks ass in my opinion! They try to do everything right, they bend over backwards to please every attendee there. Not many conventions do that these days… And hey vendors you tired of going to the big name conventions and making shit all weekend? Horror Realm might not pull in 5,000 people as some claim but at least the people that do come to the Horror Realm convention come to support the vendors unlike some of the bigger conventions where you get lost in the shuffle or just fucked over because of where they placed you or you are not considered as important as the celebrities? Vendors you are important part of a horror convention, Horror Realm could always use a couple more vendors as they treat everyone the same whether you are a vendor, guest, or just some drunk that wants to get Tiffany Shepis’ autograph?

I’m telling you all this because I want you to come… I fucking double dare your ass to attend. I don’t want to hear you can’t because you are going to seven other conventions yet this year? Fuck you; honestly you can’t make one more? Or I’m a vendor and I don’t wanna take a chance? Honestly dude or dudette you have to take a chance at some point in your business to make money or you wouldn’t be in the business… Or I don’t have money because I’m an Indy filmmaker and cannot buy a table or attend… Bullshit, if you are serious about your film and actually trying to make more, come to Horror Realm you won’t be disappointed. Believe me I know a lot of independent horror filmmakers and they have come up with some unbelievable ideas to be able to attend, buy a table, or just get their movie to the convention… Honestly horror movie fans maybe its just you are looking for an excuse not to come and if so maybe Horror Realm is not for you? Hey, believe me I try my ass of to go to other conventions and sometimes yeah you cannot and that’s fine but hey don’t make this the convention you miss? You could miss me getting thrown out of the hotel for various reasons? You could miss that chance meeting with a Ken Foree or Tiffany Shepis or Debbie Rochon in the hallway or bar where yinz bullshit for an hour. I dare you to check this awesome horror movie convention out. I’m not going to go all insane and say fuck you for not supporting it, and spend hours on some random podcast or message board talking about you. I just want you to take the chance to come to the Horror Realm convention the weekend of September 17th-19th, 2010 and see what a small but growing horror convention is like and how much fun it can be?

Hope to see you all there,

Tim Gross

Gross Movie Reviews #157

By Tim Gross

Thor: Hammer of the Gods (DVD/Sci-fi Channel) – The Home Improvement kid that starred in ‘Carrie 2: The Rage’ is back in another worthless film that you don’t know if it is based on the comic book or not, like Sci-fi Channel’s Nick Fury with the Hoff a few years back. But anyway the Home Improvement kid stars as Thor and him and the Vikings have traveled to an island in search for the hammer that happens to be guarded by werewolves. Sounds good, but when there isn’t much of a budget and the script blows ass the movie is gonna suck. I give the movie 1 ½ stars.

Hulk (VS. Thor/ Vs. Wolverine) – Another animated release from Marvel and Lionsgate that has two mini movies. First, Hulk is brought into Thor’s world by his brother only to have Hulk’s body taken over to rule the world. Second, Hulk faces off against Wolverine when Hulk becomes the next step in the Weapon X program. Awesome shit! I fucking love these animated mini movies. And if you are any kind of fan of “X-23” like I am the writers made sure to do a wink, wink about “X-23” in its story. This DVD is fun, family friendly (I actually mean it), and just dam fucking awesome! I give the DVD 4 stars.

Alien 3000 (DVD) – A pretty low budget flick that stars Lorenzo Lamas and Priscilla Barnes as Special Government agents trying to capture a space creature out in the dessert that happens to be killing people who try to take the gold that resides in its cave. Meanwhile, they use a woman to help them find the cave that has survived an attack from the alien and feels it is her destiny to kill the alien. Two things hurt this low budget flick: pacing of the film and the CGI of the alien. I give it 2 stars and can be found at www.sterlingmoviefactory.com .

Black Ice (DVD) – The latest feature from the guy (Abortion Bin Productions) that gave us the ultra weird but cool alternative horror flick ‘Synchronicity’. A woman named Evelyn in her twenties is a virgin and she is having fucked up dreams about herself and some weird woodland creature. Between her gay friend and just being lonely more than anything after she pops her own ‘cherry’ she feels pressure of having sex. One night she gets drunk and goes home with a random guy that she eventually mutilates during sex. From there on in the film it is just unbelievable… The movie is dramatic, violent, sick, and just down right dirty fun! If this wasn’t called “Black Ice” it would be called “Necromantik 3” and that is a good thing! Once again I hope this filmmaker keeps making awesome weird shit as I give this flick 3 ½ stars. The movie is like a slow burn until the last twenty minutes that just fucks with your brain. You can find and purchase the DVD at www.srscinema.com .

Alien Agent (DVD) – Don Wilson stars as an alien form another planet who is trying to stop his own kind from taking over Earth. Think of the TV series “First Wave” on a much lower budget and less inventive script! I give it 1 star.

Crank: High Voltage aka Crank 2 (Theater) – Jason Statham returns as Chev Chelios, the man who seems to be immortal. This film picks up ten seconds after the first feature where fell out of a helicopter and he is scooped up in a van and his heart is stolen out of his chest to be given to a 100 year old leader of an Asian gang. Now Chelios with his fake heart has an hour to live unless he keeps shocking his heart! The film is fucking crazier than the first and so over the top that they play off it being implausible but have lots of fun going with it. The film also stars David Carradine and Troma’s Lloyd Kaufmann. I give it 3 stars.

Gran Torino (Theater) – Once again Clint F’N Eastwood proves why he is one bad ass filmmaker and actor! Clint plays his age as he is an old man set in his ways that has just lost his wife and doesn’t feel anything for his kids. And he is just trying to live what is left of his life on his own terms drinking beer, groaning at Asian neighbors, and cleaning his beautiful car the Ford Gran Torino. One night the Asian neighbor’s kid tries to steal his car and is caught by Clint. They eventually become friends as Clint gives him odd jobs and helps teach him about life and love. The movie is awesome and Clint just proves once again why his films rock as I give it 4 stars.

Slaughter High (DVD) – An awesome slasher flick from 1987 that stars Caroline Munro and friends who in high school bully and prank a nerd named Marty. When they are punished for the prank they perform, they perform one lost prank on him on April Fool’s Day that causes horrific injuries to Marty. Ten years later… the old gang is getting back together for a reunion that also includes Marty at their old high school where Marty kills them all one by one. A great horror flick that just says 80s but doesn’t have much of extras for the DVD mainly because a) the man who played Marty killed himself before the film was even released, b) I have heard stories about any interviews or deleted scenes were lost over the years among other things, and c) We should just be glad for a VHS transfer at this point. The DVD has a lame Trivia track but I’m happy just to have the film on DVD finally. I give the movie 4 stars of course.

Dark Secrets (DVD) – A UK cop thriller about an officer who is haunted by a girl’s disappearance from her celebrity parent’s house. The officer must come to terms with his past and must follow what another missing girl is trying to tell him in his dreams in order to solve the case. An interesting film concept but a very slow cop thriller in my opinion that I give 2 stars and can be found at www.mtivideo.com .
