2008 Zombie Fest™ will be a free event open to the public at Pittsburgh’s Zombie Mecca

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

Pittsburgh, PA – June 30, 2008 – What’s the best way to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the George Romero classic zombie film Dawn of the Dead? By holding a zombie-themed festival at the site where it was filmed.

The It’s Alive Zombie Fest™, taking place on October 25 & 26 at the Monroeville Mall in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, will be a zombie fan’s delight. “Pittsburgh has long been considered the zombie capital of the world”, says Mark Menold, organizer of Zombie Fest™, and creator, producer and host of The It’s Alive Show, Pittsburgh’s late night horror host program. “People come from around the globe to make a pilgrimage to the Monroeville Mall because of Dawn of the Dead being filmed here. It’s like a zombie Mecca.”

Zombie Fest™ will feature vendors from across the county offering collectible and hard-to-find horror and zombie-themed wares for sale; zombie films; discussion panels featuring award-winning horror writers; bands; celebrity guests; games and other fun activities for zombie fans of all ages. The events at the Mall will be open to the public and free of charge; some after-hour events are in development that will carry a nominal admission fee of which all proceeds will go to the Fest’s designated charity, the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

“We decided that since 2008 is such a monumental year for zombie fans that we’d change our format from a traditional horror convention to a show that is accessible for everyone”, says Menold. “It will be a little different from what our vendors and fans are used to, but it’s an opportunity to reach a wider audience of zombie fans.”

On the eve of Zombie Festâ„¢, Friday, October 24, a Zombie Masquerade Ball will be held at the Churchill Valley Country Club. The Ball will feature live entertainment as well as a DJ and will be an age 21 and over event. Prizes will be awarded for best overall costume as well as best zombie costume. There will be a separate admission fee for the Ball (to be determined).

The highlight of the weekend will be World Zombie Day™ on Sunday, October 26 featuring zombie walks with accompanying food drives aimed at raising awareness of the problem of global hunger. At press time, approximately 40 cities have signed on to participate, including New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Seattle, London and Hong Kong as well as cities in Canada, Australia and Costa Rica. The hub of WZD will be the Monroeville Mall walk on Sunday morning, led by Menold as Professor Emcee Square, his character on The It’s Alive Show. The prior two walks organized by Menold at the Mall earned Guinness World Records™; the 2007 walk received a Rondo S. Hatton Classic Horror Award for Best Fan Event of the year.

Menold promises a memorable time for fans who participate in the weekend’s activities. “This event is going to rock 33.3% harder than last year. I want people who come to Zombie Fest™ to be able to mingle with the guests and dance at the Zombie Ball, to play zombie games, have a chance to appear in a TV show about zombies, rock out to live bands, and to participate in another world record attempt at the Monroeville Mall. This is the location where George Romero shot Dawn of the Dead! At Zombie Fest™, you can actually be a zombie for a day. Three days, really.”

World Zombie Day & ZF08

.. google_ad_section_start –>Following up on its successful inaugural convention last fall, The It’s Alive Show (www.theitsaliveshow.com) is pleased to announce the 2008 Zombie Fest, which will be held at the Pittsburgh ExpoMart on October 25 and 26. And the show is taking zombie walks to a new level by coordinating World Zombie Day.

Zombie Fest is a weekend of activities for zombie and horror fans which will feature a two-day convention with vendors, artists, celebrity guests, films and author panels; a masquerade ball; and the third annual Zombie Walk which will take place at Monroeville Mall, site of the George Romero zombie film, Dawn of the Dead.

The two previous Monroeville Mall Zombie Walks in 2006 and 2007 (pending verification) set Guinness World Records– for the largest zombie gathering; the 2007 walk is nominated for a Rondo Hattan Classic Horror Award for Best Fan Event. This year, organizer Mark Menold, producer and host of The It’s Alive Show, has even bigger plans for the walk. “We’ve been thinking about a World Zombie Day since the day after our first walk”, says Menold. “In 2008, we’re going to contact zombie walk organizers across the globe to coordinate walks on the same day, all benefiting their local food banks and raising awareness of hunger worldwide.” The Monroeville Zombie Walk will again feature a food drive on behalf of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

At press time, New York City, Atlanta (GA), Nashville (TN) and Sacramento (CA) will be joining Pittsburgh in its World Zombie Day endeavor.

The schedule of activities and celebrity guests is being developed and details will be released as they become available. But Menold says to expect a “fun, carnival-like experience” over the course of the weekend. The undead like to have fun too.

World Zombie Day – 10/26/08

Add World Zombie Day (www.myspace.com/worldzombieday) as a friend and spread the infection!

In 1968 a film was released in Pittsburgh that changed the face of horror history forever. It changed zombies from mindless undead slaves into flesh-hungry beasts that thirst for blood! Film history would never be the same.

Now, 40 years later, some new blood is picking up the rotten pieces and upping the ante.

Pittsburgh’s greatest horror hit “The It’s Alive Show” is proud to present… WORLD ZOMBIE DAY – October 26, 2008.

World Zombie Day is the day that all ghouls from Kentucky to Kokomo, from Atlanta to Afghanistan, from Washington to Wales, and from Pittsburgh to Puerto Rico can celebrate together in a near orgy of blood covered bliss!!

Every major and minor city of the world that has ever hosted a zombie walk can band together and give one solid groan heard WORLDWIDE for the zombie cause!

RISE UP UNDEAD BROTHERS AND SISTERS!!!

NOW IS OUR TIME TO GROAN AND SHAMBLE FOR WORLD HUNGER!!

*World Zombie Day will be a day when all fans of zombie culture can join together. There will be an international charity event done throughout the cities involved to help alleviate world hunger, and this will be a first.

*”The It’s Alive Show”, World Record Holders for the largest zombie walk ever, will spearhead this event from the very birthplace of zombie culture, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.

*The participating living dead are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to each zombie walk starting point. A mass effort will be taken on worldwide to prove that charity, goodwill, and zombie love can flourish in every nation regardless of race, ethnicity, sex, or religion, and that no matter where or how we die…

WE WILL COME BACK!!!
